Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya. Mawsynram receives the heaviest rainfall in the world

There are more than 1000 caves in Meghalaya.The longest cave is Krem Laitprah//Um Im-Ladit which is 22.2 Km long and is located in Nongkhlieh Elaka of Jaintia Hills.

Shillong, the capital of the state, is also the centre-point located at an altitude of 1496 meters above sea level. Shillong, which was made Assam's capital in 1874, remained so till January 1974, following the formation of Meghalaya outside Assam. The capital city derives its name from the manifestation of the creator called Shulong, born to a peasant girl, but he bestowed the art of democratic governance and rule of justice in the formation of the princely State of Shyllong (Hima Shyllong), which subsequently bifurcated into Mylliem State and Khyrim State in 1830.

The place, the people and the climate all combine to create an atmosphere to make Shillong an ideal holiday resort throughout the year. Cherrapunjee, the wettest place on earth is only 56 kms away from Shillong.

Places of Interest

Shillong Peak
An ideal picnic spot, 10 kms. from the city, 1965 meters above sea level, offers a panoramic view of the scenic country side, and is also the highest point in the State. Obeisance is paid to U Shulong at the sanctum sanctorum at the peak's summit every springtime, by the religious priest of Mylliem State. In the evening the city lights below appear like a star-studded abyss.

Cherrapunjee (Sohra)
56 kms from Shillong, situated in one of the rainiest rain-belt in the world, 1,300 meters above sea level. A pleasant drive to see roaring water falls leaping into deep gorges, including the famed Nohsngithiang falls. The lovely town is also famous for its limestone caves and orange honey. Centre of Khasi culture and literature, it also has the oldest Presbyterian Church and also an establishment of the Ramkrishna Mission.

Sohpetbneng Peak
1,343 meter, 20 kms from Shillong, regarded as sacred by the Hynniewtrep people, is set amidst a beautiful scenic view against the backdrop of a sacred forest. This 'Navel of Heaven' as per Khasi mythology is a heavenly peak which offers to fill the spiritual void and emptiness, to those who seek and desire solace and peace of mind.

Ward's Lake
Located in the heart of the city, popular for short garden walks and boating, celebrated its centenary recently.

Umiam Lake
Umiam Khwan (Barapani), 17 kms from Shillong, offers water sports facilities including sailing, water skiing, water scooter The Orchid Lake Resort and the adjacent Lum Nehru Park is an ideal quiet holiday resort.

Botanical Garden
A secluded but captivating spot with plethora of indigenous and exotic plants and is located just below the Ward's Lake.

The third oldest golf course in India. Developed in 1889 as a nine hole course, was later converted to 18 holes in 1924 by Captain Jackson and C. R. Rhodes. It is termed as the 'Gleneagle of the East' at the United States Golf Association Library and Museum.

State Museum
Located at the State Central Library complex, visitors can get a glimpse of the lifestyle and heritage of the people.

56 kms from Shillong and is known for the giant stalagmite formation shaped into a Shivalinga, called locally as 'Mawjymbuin'.

64 kms from Shillong, a popular health resort having hot-springs of sulphur water, believed to have curative medicinal properties.

Ranikor
140 kms from Shillong, is a scenic spot and an angler's paradise of carp and mahseers.

Dawki
96 kms from Shillong, is a border town, where one can have a glimpse of the neighbouring country of Bangladesh. The colourful annual boat race during spring at the Umgot river is an added attraction.

Mairang
40 kms from Shillong, capital of Nongkhlaw states. Home of the legendary U Tirot Sing Syiem (Raja of Nongkhlaw), who spear-headed a war against the British invaders to defend the territorial integrity and cultural identity of the Hynniewtrep people. He raised the battle cry on April 4, 1829, but was finally captured and died in captivity in Dhaka on July 17, 1835.

 

 

How to reach Shillong

Guwahati Airport – Flights are available from Kolkota, Delhi, Bagdogra

By Railway - The nearest Railway station is the Guwhati Railway Station 103 kms from Shillong. From here there is a choice of transport depending on ones needs.

Bus: Meghalaya Transport Corporation and Assam State Transport Corporation buses are available, frequently plying from Guwahati to Shillong

Day 1:  Arrival at Guwahati. You will be received by our friendly representative & start your journey to Shillong ‘Scotland of East’ .Your comfortable stay will be arranged at Shillong Hotel. Overnight at hotel. 

Day2: After breakfast proceed for a day long sightseeing of Upper Shillong. We will first take you to Shillong Peak. 1965 metres above sea level and 10 kms from the city, offers a panoramic view of the country side, and is also the highest point in the City.

On he outskirts of the city the mountain stream descends through two successive falls called the Elephant falls.

Our next stop  will be at the Shillong Cathedral. The Cathedral is so spacious that it can accommodate thousands of worshippers at a time. It justify the desire of the British to make Shillong ,a little Scotland .

Enjoy your afternoon meal at the police bazaar and spend some time shopping at the bazaar. It’s a total delightful experience.

We will take you to Ward’s Lake in the evening where you can go boating in the beautiful lake or take a short  walk in the colour hued garden.

Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3: After an early breakfast we will head towards Cheerapunjee ‘a must see destination for all tourists’. It is the “wettest place in the world” and is a scenic eye candy for one and all.

Just before reaching Cherrapunjee a road to the right leads to Dain-Thlen Falls. A beautiful place where you can click photos and store it for lifetime. Our second stop is at Noh-Kalikai Falls – One of the most striking waterfalls and undoubtedly the highest in Meghalaya. Mawsmai Cave,the illuminated cave provide tourist an experience of caving. We will take you to Khoh Ramhah ,  “Giants Basket” also known as “Motrop” is an imposing single formation in a shape of a giant cone.

Next we  will take you to the Living Root Bridge. It is a rubber tree with long fiber roots joining two banks.

Lunch enroute.

Back to Shillong. Evening at leisure. Overnight at hotel.

 

Day 4: Early morning we will start our journey back to Guwahati; the gateway to North-East. On the way we take you to Borapani for a leisure break where you can sit beside the beautiful lake and enjoy the scenic beauty or go Go-Karting and have an experience that you will never forget. Spring Valley Resort (26kms away from Guwahati) showcasing the multi-ethnic heritage of the state is our next stop. The dense forests, blue lakes and a variety of wildlife is an ideal place to have a good time. One can enjoy meals from the variety of delicious cuisine they serve to horse riding, elephant ride ,rock climbing or to just chilling at the hookah bar or spa!!

After a fun-filled day at this lovely resort we will check-in in a cozy-comfortable city hotel. Over night at the hotel.

Day 5: After breakfast proceed for a day long sightseeing of Guwahati, the gateway to north east. Beside the scenic beauty and the lush green landscape there are a number of tourist destinations special religious places for u to see!!

Our first stop is Kamakhya temple. It is a popular shakti sharines is India and is regarded as one of the shakti Peethams associated with the legend of Shiva and Daksha Yagna. Above Kamakhya is another small temple, Bhubaneshwari from where one can have a bird,s eye view of the city.

We will take you for a river cruise ride to the pea-cock Island in the middle of the mighty river Brahamaputra .The great Umananda temple of lord shiva is situated here.

Back to the mainland and we take you to another popular shiv mandir Sukreswar on the banks of the river. It is famous for the 6th jyotirlinga of India.

Day 6: After breakfast proceed  to Madan KamdevaKhajuraho of the East’. Kamrupa-the ancient name of Assam, is believed to have derived its name from the love god Kama who was reborn here after turned into ashes by Shiva. It’s a place where lifeless stones are sculptures  into beautiful pillars and walls, god and goddesses, flowers and plants, four headed shiva, demons, men ,women and animals .Madan Kamdev is a romance  associated to the place because of the numerous  love sculptures spreaded out in the hillock.

Next we will take you to land of golden thread –Sualkuchi. Situated on the bank of Brahamaputra, about 35km away from Guwahati is the silk capital of north east. Silks known as Muga (golden) and Pat (white) silk, it is exported to Japan and other countries from Sualkuchi in large quantity every year. Here you can see silk manufacturing process and  buy beautiful pure silk  garments for you and your dear ones.

Lunch enroute. Evening free . Overnight at hotel.

Day 7:  After Breakfast we will take you to the Assam State Museum. It houses Assam’s culture, history and crafts. Opposite to the museum is a historic tank called Dighalipukhuri. You can spend time boating in this pond in the heart o the city.

Next stop is the Regional Science Centre. A centre exhibiting various natural phenomenon and modern technological advancement. We will take you to Srimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra ,a modern cultural complex where you can feel and see the real culture of Assam. We then take you to for a  lunch to a authentic assamese restaurant. . You can enjoy your evening on your own. Overnight at the hotel.

 Day 8:  Its now time to say goodbye to the magical city of Guwahati with memories of a life time!!
